Let's start turning your physical education class into an exciting, hands-on experience where students feel like real Olympians. Teaching kids about the Winter Olympics offers a unique chance to combine fitness, teamwork, and education in a fun and memorable way. This approach not only motivates students to be active but also helps them understand the dedication and skill required to compete at the highest level.

In this post, you’ll discover how to create an engaging Olympic-themed PE unit using creative stations inspired by Winter Olympic events. You’ll learn how to introduce the Olympic spirit, set up interactive activities, and encourage students to explore and challenge themselves. Plus, I’ll share useful resources to make your planning easier and more effective.

Introducing the Winter Olympics to Your Students

Start your unit by capturing your students’ attention with a brief video highlighting the 2022 Winter Olympics. This visual introduction shows the excitement and variety of sports, helping students connect with the theme right away. Choose a video that features thrilling moments from skiing, snowboarding, speed skating, and other events to spark curiosity.

After the video, explain the meaning behind the Olympic rings. Each ring represents one of the five original continents from the first Olympic Games, symbolizing unity and international friendship. This is a great moment to discuss the values of respect, teamwork, and perseverance that the Olympics promote.

Next, talk about how athletes earn medals. Explain the difference between gold, silver, and bronze medals and what it takes to reach the podium. To make this more tangible, create a podium using gym mats and show real or replica medals. This visual and physical element helps students imagine themselves as medal winners.

Setting Up Your Olympic Stations

The heart of this unit is the set of nine stations, each representing a different Winter Olympic event or related activity. These stations allow students to self-explore, practice skills, and enjoy friendly competition. Here’s a breakdown of each station and how to run it:

Skiing

Use cones or markers to create a slalom course. Students practice balance and agility as they weave through the course. They finish with a bit of competition as they try to jump further than their opponents!

Snowboarding

Set up a balance board or use a low beam to simulate snowboarding balance and control.

Speed Skating

Mark a short oval track on the gym floor. Students race against the clock or each other to improve speed and endurance.

Chair Lift

Create a station where students work in pairs to “lift” each other on a mat or chair, building teamwork and strength.

Snowball Fight

Use soft balls or beanbags for a safe, active game that encourages quick reflexes and strategy.

Table Hockey

Set up a small table hockey game or a simplified version using sticks and a puck to develop hand-eye coordination.

Nok Hockey

A floor hockey variant played with a plastic puck and sticks, focusing on teamwork and stick skills.

Bobsled

Use mats or sled-like equipment for students to push or pull teammates, emphasizing power and cooperation.

Plank Curling

Adapt curling by having students slide weighted objects on the floor while holding a plank position, combining core strength and precision.

I highly recommend having a sign at each station explaining the activity. This helps students understand the purpose and rules while encouraging independence.

Encouraging Exploration and Teamwork

Allow students to rotate through the stations at their own pace. This self-directed exploration lets them discover which events they enjoy most and where they want to improve. Encourage them to try every station at least once to experience the full range of Winter Olympic sports.

Promote teamwork by pairing students for activities like the bobsled and plank curling stations. These events require communication and cooperation, reinforcing social skills alongside physical fitness.

To keep motivation high, consider awarding points or stickers for participation and effort rather than just performance. Celebrate personal bests and improvements to foster a positive, inclusive environment.

We keep score at many of our activities by using pop-it's. Each time a point is scored, a "pop" is awarded!

Useful Resources to Enhance Your Unit

Create these stations on your own, or save time and add polish to your Olympic PE unit, using the Winter Olympics PE Stations resource on my Teachers Pay Teachers. It offers editable station signs and detailed instructions. Just download, Print, and Go!

This resource helps you set up your stations quickly and customize them to fit your class size and space.

Additionally, I share how I use these stations in my own classes on Instagram. Follow me
